If you have to go away from home, either on vacation or business, then it is vital that you find somewhere appropriate for your dog to stay when you’re not there. Though some people will employ a dog sitter to come and stay with their dog in their home, most people put their pet into a dog boarding kennels. Before you check them in you should first ask a kennel worker to give you a guided tour so that you can make sure that it meets your standards. This is especially important if you are going away at a time outside of the usual summer holiday season as not all kennels are really set up to care for dogs all year round.
Dog kennels will need to be properly insulated to ensure that your dog doesn’t feel cold or damp in bad weather. Runs will need to be able to be covered should it start to rain heavily and there should be some form of protection from strong winds. If necessary then they should have some dog jackets available to help keep the dogs warm.
If the weather is likely to be extremely hot then the kennel should have plenty of shade for the dogs to lie in and a good supply of fresh water. Raised kennels will allow the air to circulate and possibly allow a little breeze to move through the run. If you are lucky then the kennels might even have a pool that your dog can take a swim in to cool off.
Check that the kennels have 24 hour access to a vet should your dog start to suffer from heat stroke or a winter chill as the condition will only get much worse if your dog has to wait for working hours to be seen to.
